In this edition of Storytime, I decided to have a talk with D.J. Darryl Lucius. He is a very open-minded young man and most of you might already know him. This guy is stealing the spotlight in the center of every club he plays in. He is passionate about what he does and he is still growing. At storytime, we like to see people grow in doing what they love. If you already know D.J. Darryl Lucius from his performances, there is more to him than you might think.  As we keep learning here at Storytime, you should never judge a book by its cover. And thankfully today D.J. Darryl Lucius opened a part of that book so that you as the readers of Storytime and his fans can get to know him better.

                                  Who is D.J. Darryl Lucius?

D.J. Darryl Lucius his actual name is Darryl Atmodimedjo , he got the name Darryl Lucius from his first and middle name.  He is a young Surinamese D.J. and entrepreneur. Ever since he was a kid he was involved with music. When he was only 12 years old he started taking keyboard lessons and he finished a 6-year music study within 2 years. Make no mistake, you can definitely say that he has a spark for music. After D.J. Darryl Lucius finished his music study he gained experience by interning for a now-famous Surinamese music band.  D.J. Darryl Lucius says that it was a period full of learning experiences that he is great-full for. He started looking for new challenges.  And a new challenge did indeed present itself. A famous Surinamese D.J.  from the 80's who also trained a lot of members in the New generations of famous Surinamese D.J.'s approached him. At that moment Darryl Lucius had no more doubts. He accepted the challenge and his career as a D.J. began. He started when he was 15 years old and now is a professional D.J. for more than 13 years.

                               What music is all about for D.J. Darryl Lucius.

In his free time, Darryl likes to sport mainly football and of course he loves to make music. He has performed on different podiums in and outside of Suriname.  For example events like Lustig Suriname, Telesur wandelmars, Owru Jari in the city, and a lot of other gigs where he managed to keep the crowd's attention for all the right reasons. D.J. Darryl Lucius has performed in many clubs as well.  Famous national and international clubs like Next club Suriname where he is the D.J. of the house, Euphoria, 22 Yards (as a home D.J.), Energy, Zsa Zsa Zsu, Touche, Mambo, Le 'Thirt, Escape in Holland, Crystal Venue also in Holland and lots of other famous places where the party crowd gather.  He also did a lot of gigs for different Surinamese companies, I don't want to bore you with the list. But the main point here is that where there is a party and the roof might actually come off you are likely to find Darryl to be the D.J. of the night.   Despite his fast-growing fame and the career he builds for himself through all these years, he is a very humble person. I asked D.J. Darryl Lucius what some of his career highlights are and he said"  Performing in Holland next to the world's top D..J's and performing at Lustig events. During these performances, I got to play alongside other top D.J's like Hardwell, Leroy Styles, Dub vision, The party squad, KimKat, Lucien Foort, Mr warning, Yellow claw, etc. The music industry in Suriname is heading forward fast and in a positive direction. Especially how music is easy to find on the internet and young people keep coming with new and fresh ideas. " D.J. Darryl his new goal is to play on festivals like Tomorrow land or Ultra festival, he certainly has to confidence to make it that far. In ten years he sees himself on top of the world. He is full of ambition and willingness to work for what he wants. His passion for music at a young age made him go from the keyboard to the piano and now a D.J. who already has represented Suriname abroad. " The music industry in Suriname definitely has the potential as long as people keep making music and make the best use of their talent. Music after all has no limits.  I enjoy playing music for others so that they can enjoy themselves. Being a DJ is beside my job also my hobby. If you can turn your hobby into your job then you will always enjoy what you do. " Besides playing music D.J. Darryl Lucius also has his own company. His company rents music installations and he owns his own recording studio.  He has been running it for the last 10 years. I asked Darryl Lucius if he has ever had a crazy fan? You know the ones we see in the movies.  He replied saying " I did have crazy fans, I once had a fan who would follow me everywhere I went. One time she even came to my party uninvited, but I love those fans. Because it reminds me that I mostly need to do it for them. The fame never had an influence on my life. Because everywhere I am I stay the same. I don't have public anxiety and have been in the spotlight ever since I was a child. You can say I like being in the spotlight and am already used to it. How I behave at home is the same way how I behave when I am outside."   D.J. Darryl says he learned working with sound installations on his own. Self-study helped him master it but he is still learning new things every day as he keeps developing with his company. "My favorite performance is when I made a debut for Lustig events and the manager was present. I was supposed to perform for one hour, but I ended up performing for 4 hours straight. Nobody wanted me to stop and I had fun doing it so I did with all my pleasure.  My role model is D.J.  Tiesto , we spoke about me being a D.J. and music but something a lot of people don't know is that Darryl Lucius also has his school degrees. Music was always a stimulant during my studies.  I am actually an engineer, I studied Mechanical engineering (Werktuigbouwkunde). Music and studying go hand in hand." D.J.  Darryl Lucius advises young people who want to follow their dreams to " Never give up".

In conclusion, I think we at Story Time can certainly learn a lesson from the young guests we have had in the last month. They all teach us to never give up and to keep following our dreams. Because it doesn't matter how old you are, who you are, and where you are from. As long as you have a passion in life you should never give up on it.
