I have found a new spot that is absolutely gorgeous! Not only is the interior stunning, but the desserts are a true delight for the taste buds. 😋 Ice and Candy Suriname is a boutique dessert shop located in the South Square Plaza complex, right on the corner of Verlengde Gemenelandsweg and Riekelaan. 📍
If you have trouble finding it, you can easily look them up on Google Maps. They are open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 AM to 10:30 PM (closed on Mondays). I must warn you: their drinks are highly addictive! I’ve been hooked ever since I discovered this place. Allow me the honor of introducing you to your new favorite spot. ✨

I had the pleasure of interviewing Kelly Lau, the daughter of the owner, despite her very busy schedule managing the various restaurants in the complex. Seated in the modern, stylish shop, Kelly explained the vision behind the brand.
"We wanted to add a dedicated dessert spot to the complex," Kelly shared. "We already have Chinese cuisine at Lucky Twins, and guests can chill with a steak at XO Lounge. Ice and Candy was originally intended for children, but we noticed a huge trend in milk tea and beverages in Suriname. We decided to adapt our concept to that trend while keeping the original name." 🧋
The shop opened its doors in February. Because they focused on a "soft opening" without a grand announcement, many people visit the complex for XO or Lucky Twins without realizing this dessert heaven is right there!

Authentic Flavors & Expert Craftsmanship 👨🍳What sets Ice and Candy apart is their authenticity. Most of their recipes hail from Hong Kong, and they employ a specialized beverage chef who trained for years in China and worked in famous Hong Kong cafes. 🇭🇰 "Even the products we use, like our Matcha tea, are imported directly from China," Kelly noted. 🍵 When I asked for her top recommendations, she suggested: For Fruit Lovers: The Fruit Tea (very refreshing!) or the Passion Fruit Pineapple. 🍍 The Classics: The Classic Bubble Milk Tea. Savory Bites: Best-sellers like the Chicken Lollipops and Garlic Wings. 🍗
They are also constantly adapting. While their chef is an expert in traditional Chinese flavors, they’ve tweaked the recipes to match the Surinamese palate—which usually prefers things a little sweeter! 🍬 |
The Signature: A La Ice Candy 🍨
If you only try one thing, Kelly recommends the A La Ice Candy with five toppings. It is their signature dessert, and you won't find it anywhere else! After trying it myself, I quickly understood why it’s a "must-try."
The design of the shop is also part of the experience. The owner invested heavily in a rustic-modern interior featuring high-quality wood and comfortable furniture. Like the sister locations (XO and Juicy), the goal is to make every customer feel right at home. 🪵🛋️

One of the coolest things about South Square Plaza is the interaction between the businesses. If you are dining at Lucky Twins, you can actually order a beverage from Ice and Candy or even a steak from Juicy! 🥩+🥤=❤️
