Beni's Christmas Palace In Suriname

Beni's Christmas Palace In Suriname Just like in the photo above this text, I am okay but I am not completely okay. I feel awful on the inside and for a long time it was difficult to find the motivation to return to blogging.  Tomorrow's Christmas, so I mustered all of my strength to at least finish another episode. I've been gone for a while because as usual, life got hectic. But this time in a bad way! As you guys know a while ago I started a company in Suriname. Most of my days were spent creating Story Time episodes, working, doing social work or going along to get a taste of the field.  When we go to clients, sometimes I get to see awesome places. Or in between on our journeys we tend to make pitstops. This Story Time episode is supposed to be about my visit to Beni's Christmas palace. But let me tell you about what happened after that first. Just so you can understand how my Christmas spirit, transformed in the energy of mourning. People see the good, but I'l...

P&G roti shop

Story Time: Roti Hunting at P&G in Suriname

How are you guys? I am back with a new Story Time adventure. This time we are going on a hunt for roti.  Indian food is one of the many varieties that the Surinamese kitchen has to offer.  In 1873 the first immigrants from India arrived in Suriname on a big sailboat named the Lalla Rookh.  There was a sudden need for immigrants in this once-thriving colony.  In 1863 slavery was abolished in this once dutch, and for a short, while British colony ( It's a long story, let's leave that for another Story Time) When slavery was abolished in Suriname, the plantation owners didn't immediately set the slaves free.  Instead, they received a contract where they still had to work on the plantations for the following 10 years.  But they would receive low wages and better treatment. When the 10 years passed by they were free to go their own way.  The plantation owners and of course the motherland had to experiment to find new workers that would suit the Surinamese climate.  Suriname has been a lucrative high-income colony since the late 16th century.  In an effort to keep profits high a lot of immigrants were brought into the country in different phases.  One of them was the Indians, that journeyed on the Lala Rookh for at least 99 days all the way from Calcutta India to Suriname. Now our history doesn't have a lot of glorious moments. One thing all of the immigrants that made their way to Suriname have in common is this ancient pain in the history of our ancestors. You really have to understand the history of my country before you can understand what kind of mix I am. Since everyone is always puzzled by what I am. Especially when I meet foreigners! With all the bad in our past, we managed to find the good in our future. As a country, we might not completely be stable. Still, I admire the way we Surinamese people share our food. Food is what connects us and for Surinamese people, food is how we share our love. When someone invites you to eat or to cook for you, it's them sharing what they have to offer. In that way despite the different ethnicities living here, we all know how to celebrate each other's holidays.  Another thing you can say that we share with absolute certainty is the dishes our ancestors brought with them, that received their own Surinamese twist as time passed. I am so proud to be a Surinamese person, and the idealist in me still sees so much potential in this amazing South American country that is also a part of the Caribbean.  Gasp, I know my Storytimes keep getting more intense and this is just the beginning. When I share my blog stories with you guys, I not only share a part of myself and my interests but where I am from.  The Indri Gandhi weg is a famous road in the district Wanica. I explained to you guys what a district is in my previous blog posts.  If you ever visit Suriname you will certainly see a part of the Indira Gandhi weg at least once! Especially if you are heading from Zanderij to Paramaribo!  The Indira Gandhi weg is a long road, before you reach the Golf Club Paramaribo when you are traveling from Zanderij our country international Johan Adolf Pengel Airport you will find P&G roti shop. Actually, there are a lot of roti shops in Suriname. If you are inpatient follow me on Tik Tok, or feel free to jump on the Story Time U.F.O, that way we will abduct you to go on adventures with me as I bring my blog to life.  This time let's start with P&G first. They have a couple of locations in Suriname. So if you this one, you can still look up their other locations. Be sure to keep an eye out if you are willing to try out their Indian food. I mostly go for the Roti chicken and the Bara's ( Indian snack) that they sell.   But they also sell fast-food and other Surinamese dishes. My little team and I have voted and we gave this place a 7 out of 10 for their roti chicken.  We deducted points because of the size of our portions. It was good but not the best. It is well-spiced, like a normal homemade roti chicken.  But we still suggest that you go taste their roti if you are ever in Suriname. Each Roti place in this country is a different experience. You can call us the country of the roti drive-thru and I am not even joking. Surinamese people take roti very seriously!  No roti can be the same, so they are all unique in their own way. I would love to hear your feedback on this. I made a video of my visit to P&G and the food that I got. I hope you guys enjoy it and I can't wait to see you again in the next Story Time Episode.
