Story Time:
Dinner at El Mesón de la cava in Santo Domingo
Hola mi Story Time amigos from around the world, how have you been? I am back with another Story Time foodie/travel adventure. In this Story Time edition, I want to talk to you about this gorgeous, romantic, breathtakingly beautiful restaurant we found during our short visit to Santo Domingo. The Dominican Republic has given me an unforgettable experience indeed. Sometimes it is good to just step out of your empire and explore the world's possibilities. Shows myself a little appreciation for how I have been coming out of my shell lately. The small wins are allowed to count, just make sure you subscribe to my Story Time blog when you see that U.F.O. pop on your screen, simply by entering your email. Some of my fellow youth delegates wanted to explore Santo Domingo beyond the property of El Embajador a royal hideaway hotel. I tagged along with the group as they picked out a place that was about a 10-minute drive from the hotel. The restaurant is called El " Shachem Lieuw at restaurant El Mesón de la cava. I loved the tropical vibes that the restaurant gives. It is designed like a cave with a puzzling route. At each corner, you might end up with a different kind of surprise. When you down the stairs into the restaurant's garden you will see a building with a sign that says Las Terrazas del Meson. That's the building we entered, we even took the lift down. I loved their interior decoration. They had a live band playing music right in front of us. They contributed to creating an enchanting atmosphere for us to enjoy with our dinner.
I loved the lighting, decor, and aesthetics in and around the property of El Mesón de la cava in Santo Domingo. I had to look for a wall outlet for one of my friends that also attended the conference as a part of the Suriname delegation. She wanted to charge her phone, so I asked the staff for help on this one. Thank goodness those Spanish classes I took started to pay off. Even if my Spanish needed a bit of brushing up, the important thing was they could understand me and I could understand them. If you don't speak Spanish or don't have anyone that speaks Spanish in your group, keep Googe translate on standby. That's going to be your best friend while you are traveling through the Dominican Republic. I was surprised at the creativity to find out that the wall outlet was behind some flowers that were hanging from flowerpots in the cave. Props to whoever created and designed this concept that El Mesón de la cava in Santo Domingo embraces. There is wifi you can connect to, you are going to need internet to gain access to the menu. You will receive a QR code that you can scan. It will open a link where you can select if you want to read the English or Spanish menu. Ordering from the English menu in English is a no-go. I tried that and I was not successful at all.
Of course, my royal vibes had to order a Pina Colada. You know what it is my new goal to taste a Pina Colada in every country that I visit. Let's do this, I got nothing to lose at this rate! The Pina Colada was okay and more on the Pineapple side. For food, I ordered Chicken cooked in wine with some kind of Pasta. Looking back I regret all the food I wasted, but I couldn't help it. Our delicate Surinamese pallet isn't quite used to these Latin kinds of foods. I thought the salad was too bitter for me, the Chicken did taste good but I didn't even finish that. The salad that came along with my pasta, I had it before in the Dominican Republic and each time was a struggle. The bitter and sour combination is not something we Surinamese people are used to. I don't mean to offend anyone or any country's food I am only sharing my experiences as a young Surinamese woman who got to try the food from El Mesón de la cava in Santo Domingo.
On the other hand, I really enjoyed getting to watch the live band perform from where we were setting. I got swept away in the music and the atmosphere. I couldn't help but swing my hips as I was sitting on my chair. The prices were reasonable my part of the bill ended up being around $2,-. I took the rest of the food back to my hotel, where along with other food that I got from different places it was left untouched. I know next time I'll push through and try to adapt to your food Dominican Republic, no harsh feelings. But I am certainly not a fan of the bitter salad, I am guessing it's popular for you guys since they also offered me the same bitter salad when I was at the Intercontinental Hotel for the conference. Walking outside of the restaurant I have to admit that I was more in love with the looks, the vibes, and the music than the food. I loved the ocean view as the cool breeze danced with my hair. The gorgeous lights and the view of a part of the Dominican city. I could only imagine how beautiful this place must be during day time with such a wonderful ocean view. We took a cab back to El Embajador a royal hideaway hotel. If you want to read more about my stay at that hotel click here.I made a video of my visit to El Mesón de la cava in Santo Domingo. I hope you enjoy it, and until next time right here on Story Time. I have many more fun adventures to share with you in the near future.
