Carnival In Suriname
Hello, my Story Time friends! How are you guys doing? You have no idea how happy I am to finally be able to share this video with you! With my local internet provider, Telesur, uploading the carnival vlog I made was a struggle! 😥 It was also very stressful. But I'm not someone who gives up! After my last attempt, I was finally able to upload my video without it failing in just 24 hours. 😏 Behind-the-scenes blogger struggles that some people don't see. I put a lot of effort and work into creating Story Time, and so far, I'm proud of the result. In Suriname, we have our own form of Carnival. It's called the Avond Vierdaagse, and this event is held annually. I remember watching my first few carnivals as a little girl. 😤 I guess the grown-ups weren't kidding when they said time goes by quickly.
Avond Vier Daagse is a Dutch name that refers to the 4 days and nights that the Carnival is held. Because of COVID, we didn't have Carnival for a long time. Remember back when the world was in lockdown? But now that the world has slowly returned to normal, Carnival is back. This event is mostly held during the big Surinamese vacation ( August-September). I wanted to capture this event for you, to share what life is like in my home country, Suriname. This is like the carnivals I watched as a kid growing up. Only then were the groups significantly larger. However, the decline in the number of participants is related to the economic crisis in Suriname. It was still a beautiful experience that I got to catch on camera. I went on the fourth day, which is also the longest distance that the carnival participant had to walk. Some groups and individuals participated in the Carnival. I even saw people of all ages and foreigners participate in this Surinamese version of Carnival. I went prepared with my filming equipment and captured shots of the various costumes worn and the dances that were performed. Some groups wore clothes that represented their history and culture. For example, the groups that wore the koto misi, Pangi, or indigenous clothing. If you are ever in Suriname during the dry season and get the opportunity to witness our Avond Vier Daagse, I certainly recommend that you go watch! It'll help you understand our culture better, and you'll see different stories unfold before you. But if you do plan on visiting one of the Carnival hotspots, do leave on time! This event gets crowded each year. Sometimes you'll see hundreds of people scouting out a spot in advance. I hope you guys enjoy the vlog I made as much as I enjoyed making this Story Time episode. As you'll notice from my vlog, we also love to party in this part of the Caribbean. If you're new here, don't forget to follow or subscribe for more exclusive content!
