Lucy stretched out her arms and yawned. She wiped her eyes. Her warm bed no longer felt comfortable to lie in. She reached out an arm and struggled to find her glasses on the blue nightstand located right next to her bed. The sound of her books falling onto the floor echoed in her quiet room. It took a few minutes before she finally felt the familiar frame of her glasses. Two legs simultaneously swung out of bed.
" I guess I am back in this world."
Lucy sighed to herself and went to brush her teeth. She was used to putting herself on autopilot. Her body moved to get ready for the day. But her mind was still caught analyzing each detail of the dream she had. In her heart, she knew what it meant. After a cold shower, she shrugged the thoughts from her head. It was fun to dive into the messages from her subconscious, but in this reality, she had way too much to do. She's always been a chaser of dreams.
Many idealist get lost in a whirl of their thoughts. They are stuck in a place where everything is possible. Where philosophy bends the reality of human consciousness. But not Lucy! She'd rather chase dreams into this reality. Even after a long night of sleep, she felt tired. She changed into a pink dress for the day. Not because she felt cute! It was just easy to wear. All she had to do with a dress was pull her head through the hole, and she was ready to face the world.
She rushed down the stairs, and when she opened the door, the familiar pair of reliable eyes was already waiting outside for her. Alan stood beside his pitch-black truck. In one hand, he was holding a cup of coffee, and in the other, he held a sandwich.
A warm gesture paired with his typical cranky smile.
"Here, hold this! We need to hurry and go." Alan snapped at her. Lucy climbed into the passenger seat of his truck. A spot that was always specially reserved for her. She enjoyed being a passenger princess. The coffee was still hot, so she blew through the lid to cool faster. Her stomach rumbled before she even got a bite. The chicken sandwich smelled fresh. It was from her favorite bakery. These small gestures proved how well Alan knew her. She stared out the window as they drove through crowded streets. She took in the sight and took a deep breath. Her thoughts wished he could understand her mind the same way. A moment of peace was suddenly loudly interrupted by Alan's morning ritual.
Among all the positive qualities Alan had, there were a few Lucy disliked. One of them was his rage! This manifested itself in one of his daily hobbies. Indulging in road rage! Lucy knew he was right in most cases. But her gentle side thinks it's pointless to stick your head out the window to yell at every Tom and Dick! Despite her own opinions, she tolerated the morning ritual. Over time, she even figured out that what Alan loved the most was getting creative with his insults. If an Olympic game for road rage existed, she was certain he'd win all the medals!
" At least he makes the hour drive to the office entertaining!" She quietly thinks to herself.
" Hey Moron, can't you see that huge pothole! Get wipers for your glasses!" Alan yelled to the driver, who raced in front of us. Lucy snickered! She found it funny because Alan also wore glasses. His road rage was so vicious that not one bad driver was safe from him! After passing a string of Alan's road rage victims, they finally arrived at the office building.
The building had multiple floors. Alan drove straight to the parking floor. He honked three times when we passed John. He's the building's security officer. John smiled and waved us good morning. He got up from his chair with this morning's newspaper in his hand. A small red button was pressed, and the gate opened. Alan made a few swift moves and reversed parked into their regular spot, 8B.
" How's that project coming along?"
" Isn't it too early for you to bring up a headache?"
"We'd better tackle it sooner or later. I want this solved before the tender bidding. Or else it will be a real headache."
" I'm not sure we can handle it. We're quite understaffed. Our competitors have a larger construction team and more resources."
Lucy stopped in front of the elevator. Alan pressed a button, and they waited for the elevator. Before the elevator doors opened, she turned and looked into his eyes.
"Nonsense, if I believed in the impossible, we wouldn't even be here!"
"We're barely here! It's a struggle to keep up with the demand. Especially with limited resources."
" We'll get there once we push through demand and meet quota."
Her sentence ended with a beep. The lift doors opened, and they got in.
" Please, I beg you! Do not stress me out with this! Don't let your procrastination become the reason for my rising blood pressure. Try to finish this today!"
"It's not like I want to procrastinate! I have my hands full overseeing the technical details of the Swanson project. You were the one who said, " If the client wants a 1000 square meter pond with water features, just build it, Alan. Well, now, I'm busy building it!"
" Fine, I'll try to figure it out while dealing with the board. They're going to be a pain in my behind!"
The lift doors opened again on the 7th floor. Lucy's phone rang. She quickly grabbed her phone from the hidden pocket in her dress. When she heard her ringtone, she thought it was another client begging to be removed from the wait list or a supplier. She glanced at the screen, and her swift movement froze.
Midway through her steps, she stopped. The name that appeared on the screen belonged to another pair of familiar eyes from her dreams. Samuel's name was saved with a pair of heart-eyes emoji. An edit from the past. They had grown distant throughout the years. Yet she still couldn't muster the courage to reverse the edit. Her hands began shaking. One of the few moments she experienced signs of nervousness in her body.
" Why don't you go ahead and get things sorted with the team. I'll catch up with you soon. I need to take this call."
Alan nodded and carried on.
