Story Time:
Roti from Jairoop restaurant in Suriname
Hello, my dearest Story Time readers from around the world! Today I am happy to write to you about another delicious roti story. As I mentioned a couple of times before in my blog this warm tropical South American/ Caribbean country Suriname, which I call home is rich in cultural diversity. This cultural diversity can be noticed in our food. Since in Suriname we share a love for each other's dishes. Today I want to explore another popular roti restaurant in Suriname with you guys. This roti shop is called Jairoop and the location I visited is the one at Ringweg. It is not far from the International mall, which means you have plenty of options to explore while you are in this part of Paramaribo. If you are new to the Story Time tribe and not familiar with my country Suriname I have to tell you that roti is a big deal here. Most of the Roti restaurants here have a drive-thru. We Take roti to a fast-food level in Suriname. Don't underestimate the entrepreneurial skills of Surinamese people. Even in tough times and a global crisis we manage to be creative enough with the tools that we have to create an income despite living in a struggling economy. That's mostly caused due to corruption, but I am not here to fill your head with that kind of drama today. I just wanted to mention how talented Surinamese people are at creating something for themselves. You won't be surprised to notice that Jairoop has a drive-thru too. You can't miss it, this roti shop is specifically designed to grab your attention. I have to say that I love their design and even their interior decoration.
The rose with a golden stem took me straight to a fairytale. At that moment I felt like I was living in a fairytale. For a large part living my life seems like a fairytale. Where I like to see myself as the superhero going on all these adventures and landing in places where the universe needs me to be at that moment. It's a lot deeper than you might think. Somehow it brought me joy to see this fairytale-like rose, it reminded me that for one reason or another life put me in this exact spot where I had not planned to be for the day just to admire the beauty of this rose. It triggered something inside of me that reminded me of the fairy tales I would write as a young girl. For a moment I felt like that writer inside of me was still there. Despite everything, I had to go through. At that moment I didn't even know what the future had in store for me. As that is most often the case because this is what makes the journey special and I take joy in small things like this. Jairoop roti restaurant has a lot of different seating options. You can even choose to go upstairs if you want to.
I chose to remain downstairs, but that was because I had an awesome view sitting at their see-through glass. We decided to order something quick since we were in a hurry. The drive-thru was busier than the restaurant so we just parked outside and went inside to order our food. There is also a cute outdoor area where you can eat if you want to enjoy open-air scenery.
We had ordered roti rolls and some Rasgullas. I love a good Rasgulla, if you don't know what that is it is an Indian sweet. I couldn't resist the Jalebi either. That is also an Indian sweet treat that is popular in Suriname. The roti roll I ordered was with chicken liver and the one my driver ordered was just chicken and potatoes. I have to say Jairoop, you outdid my expectations. I enjoyed each bite of my food. Only the Rasgulla could have been milkier. I definitely recommend that you give Jairoop roti restaurant a chance during your travels in Suriname.
In the above picture, you have the roti roll chicken or "roti roll kip" as we say in dutch on the left and the "roti roll lever" (roti roll with chicken liver) on the right. Jairoop describes their roti roll as " A mix of chicken fillet thinly sliced celery and potatoes results in a tasty snack rolled up in a traditional curry sauce in a roti pasta" on their packaging. It is a delicious filling snack especially if you are in a hurry on the road. I have to say that I really enjoyed the roti roll chicken liver. But be prepared for the spice if you can't handle your peppers. They can really work up a sweat.
Next time I am certainly planning of trying different kinds of food from Jairoop roti restaurant in Paramaribo Suriname. That's an adventure I'll certainly take you guys on.
