I tried wood seal carving!

Hold on to your space seats, because the story time U.F.O. is back at it again, zapping fresh stories straight from the mothership into your inbox! 🛸 If you’ve been following my blog or my ShachemLieuw YouTube channel for a while, you probably already know I’ve been deep-diving into learning Mandarin and exploring more about my Chinese heritage. Well, my latest mission involved signing up for a wood seal carving class, and I liked it so much that I’ve officially decided to purchase a wood seal carving kit and turn this into a permanent hobby! 🧰✍️ Fun plot twist: we didn't actually work with real wood. We got to practice on erasers! But it was still super fun learning all the traditional carving techniques. (For those wondering, the Chinese carving knife used for this is called an intou or bidao —often referred to as an iron pen or a graver!) The class went pretty in-depth about the history of seal carving in China. Historically, seals (or chops) served as powerful credential...

Let's Try Javanese Food From Warung Mbah Paidjah

Javanese Food From Warung Mbah Paidjah

"Let's Eat with Shachem Lieuw"

Hello, my Story Time friends, today, the Story Time U.F.O. 👽👾🛸 is once again landing in a small South American Country called Suriname. Well, small in population, but about 4 times the size of the Netherlands. Our journey takes us to the year 2023 in Paramaribo Noord. We land at Blauwgrond, a popular food destination for locals and tourists. In this area, you will find numerous Javanese warungs serving a variety of food. It's akin to the Surinamese version of late-night street food. The Warungs also offer their services during the day, but they are more frequently visited at night. Grabbing a bite to eat with friends or family at Blauwgrond has become a part of the Surinamese nightlife culture. I went to Warung Mbah Paidjah with my friends, and I'm taking you guys along on this Surinamese foodie adventure. Javanese food is very popular in Suriname, thanks to its delicious flavors. 😍😋 We picked this Warung among all the Javanese restaurants in Blauwgrond because it was the least crowded. Most of the other Warungs were fully occupied, and others I had already visited for my blog. 😉 See, behind the scenes, I do put in the effort to create and share these Story Time productions with you guys! 💓So don't forget to subscribe or follow! By becoming a part of the Story Time Tribe, you'll be the first to get my adventures zapped in your mail.📬We got a table at Warung Mbah Paidjah, just in time. Because right after we took a seat, the crowds came pouring in. We started off with our drinks, and I have to say that the Dawet surprised me! Dawet is a popular Javanese drink made with lemongrass. I had it several times, but this one was so refreshing because it was made with coconut water. 🥥The Coconut water enhanced the flavors of the Dawet. It was a refreshing stimulant for my tastebuds.🧉🍹Just what I needed after a long, stressful day in the heat. I ordered the Yellow rice nasi with Goedangang, or as we say in Suriname, "Gele rijst met Goedangang!". My friends ordered the Long Tong Tahoe. Both dishes were worth the wait. The Yellow rice with Goedangang came with an egg and baked potato sambal. 🌶 Javanese food is often spicy. But this dish was one to make you lick your fingers. Warung Mbah Paidjah impressed me with the quality of their food. All the dishes that we tried were authentic Javanese dishes that have been around in Suriname since our ancestors first immigrated here from Indonesia. In case you're wondering what Goedangan is, it's a dish made from long beans, bean sprouts, and grated coconut, cooked to achieve a sweet and spicy flavor.
