Tapas Night At Restaurant Tangelo In Paramaribo
Fawaka ( It means "How are you?" In the local sranang tongo language spoken in Suriname.), my Story Time friends! It feels great to be back with another foodie and travel adventure in Paramaribo. Especially since I've been posting more often on my blog. Being able to share my adventures with you guys allows me to explore and express my creativity. It's almost as if my blog has become an online magazine!πI always wanted to run a magazine. This was a wish of mine during my teen years when I just started designing. Back then it was Shachem Designs and I got to learn from executing all the projects that I received. A lot of mistakes were made, but thanks to those mistakes I gained wisdom. I'm the kind of person that's not afraid to fail. When I used to design menus I went through my dad's expensive ink cartridges in record time. π
πDespite my designs not coming out quite right, he wouldn't let me quit. Instead, we kept trying until it came out just right. One time it took us over 100 prints before it came out correct. πBack then technology was not as advanced as it is now. Today our modern technological advancements have made a lot of things easier. I guess that ease of access is a valuable trait that technology gives us. Because of this ease of access, I get to turn Story Time into my own virtual online magazine. When I hit the post button, I get to share my adventures and stories with the rest of the world.ππ That's why I am excited to dive into this episode. Tangelo introduced their tapas night for the entire month of October. Each Friday and Saturday night they have live music entertainment. But you can also order Tapas for two at a special price from their menu. For some extra cash, your meal can be upgraded with two dragon fruit mojitos. My friend Charisa took me out, and it quickly turned into a Story Time foodie adventure. When we arrived at Tangelo it was already a bit crowded. This Surinamese restaurant is popular among tourists. It's also located within walking distance from Hotel Torarica. On the weekends this part of Paramaribo can get crowded so we decided that it was best to go early. The weekend Tapas deal starts at 7 p.m. On their menu tangelo has 8 Tapa varieties. Out of these, you are allowed to choose 4 that will show up on your plate. With the music that was playing in the background, the vibe was certainly there. Although it wasn't the live music that was playing. During our visit to Tangelo, we got to see the musicians set up their instruments, but we didn't get to hear them play. The nice waitress who helped us offered us great service. We ordered the cheesy chicken gringas, the pineapple Masoes fish sliders, seafood fireballs, and the sticky prawn crostini. The waitress brought us an appetizer before the dishes that we ordered were placed on our table.
The appetizer was a crunchy chicken snack with some vermicelli bits on top of it. Although we doubted for a moment if it was fish or chicken. It was a thoughtful warm-up for the plate of tapas we were getting ready to devour! When our Dragon Fruit Mojito's arrived they looked like a beautiful cocktail display. But my drink had a bit too much mint in it. The flavor of all that mint bursting through overwhelmed the dragonfruit. After I got home I did read online that mint is very healthy for the human body. So maybe I shouldn't complain about that after all? Charisa thought that hers had too much lime. You really have to get in there and mix your cocktail up. All the sugar in my drink seemed to have collected itself on the bottom of my glass. Now that's another way of bringing the Dutch expression " Looking deep into your glass." to life.ππ It's an expression to hint when someone drinks a lot. But I'm not that big of a drinker and will occasionally enjoy a cocktail or mocktail. We ordered some juice from the menu. Their orange juice tastes natural. But my friend thought that her passion fruit juice had too much sugar. I decided to give their Chocolate Caramel cake a try. It's a house specialty that's popular at Tangelo. I was in luck as they had one last one in stock.πThe chocolate Gods do favor me after all!ππ«The dessert looked so pretty when it arrived! Like it jumped straight out of a picture from my Insta feed. πEverything about it was edible. It was even decorated with golden flakes and edible gold paint. The creamy top part tasted like caramel and it wasn't too overwhelming sweet. It had chocolate sprinkles around it. A dutch favorite that we took over in Suriname. I remember taking Broodje Hagelslag to school. Making a chocolate sprinkle sandwich with banana eyes was the first memory that popped up in my mind when I saw my treat. πThe bottom part is a sweet crunchy chocolate cookie with a chocolate filling. If you get this dessert, finish it in one sitting, or else the chocolate on the inside will melt. It was almost too pretty to eat! But my gut knew better and won the battle.π½When it came to the tapas, I didn't like the cheesy chicken gringas. It kind of had a taste that I'm not used to. But I did love the fire seafood balls! That one and the sticky prawn crostini were a favorite at the table. I did love the color of the fish slider buns. It's certainly a unique experience! This was the first time that I had tapas and I look forward to tasting many more. ππ I made a vlog of our girl's night at Tangelo. I hope you guys enjoy the video and until our next foodie episode!
