Hakrinbank's Car Expo At The Hermitage Mall

 

Dear friends, I've returned to share another Story Time adventure. It was a hot day in Paramaribo, and we drove by the Hermitage Mall when we noticed an event in the parking lot. 

Although I was not dressed up for the occasion, we decided to stop. The Hakrinbank, a popular local bank, had flags on the parking lot that were recognizable from miles away. We entered the Hermitage Mall's parking lot and saw multiple new cars. It turns out that the bank was hosting a car expo. Many car dealers were present and displaying the latest models. The bank was promoting its car loans. Loud music was playing around us, and the people present were having fun. If you were interested in a model, they'd even let you take it for a test drive.  

The Tesla Model Y caught my interest. Electric cars are new to Suriname, so you don't encounter many on the streets. Tesla's Model Y is for sale for $58500,-. I've sat in Hybrid cars before, but this was the first time I saw a Tesla up close. The design is nice, but I think the price is too high.

I'm all for renewable energy and reducing fossil fuels for our planet's carbon footprint. But Suriname's infrastructure and lack of public EV charging stations prove we aren't ready to implement this new technology. With all the potholes on our streets, I couldn't help but wonder if the Model Y could endure our South American terrain. 

I still believe it's a good thing to introduce this kind of technology to our local market. I am just shocked that they allowed Tesla's electric cars to be sold in Suriname before Starlink. I've been waiting for many years for our Telecommunications Authorities to approve Starlink in my country.  I guess not all forms of progress are easily welcomed. 

Starlink's arrival would be a slap in the face to Telesur. The Surinamese government is Telesur's largest shareholder.

Many people have said they'd happily switch to Starlink. Just because our local internet provider can't provide good quality. Most of the time, you don't even get the MB's you pay for.  I've been told they already have electric charging roads in other countries. You can charge your car while driving! But it will take many years and progressive politicians before Suriname can operate at that level. 

Our governments are more focused on digging up raw oil offshore and collecting government take ( A tax added to the oil price. Surinamese people pay the tax per liter purchased.). Despite these challenges, it's still great to dream about what could be. Maybe one day, future generations will lead and open many doors of change and innovation for my country.
