Ditch the Cashpoint: Why Foreigners Should Skip the Cashpoint ATMs in Suriname

Ditch the Cashpoint: Why Foreigners Should Skip the Cashpoint ATMs in Suriname (By Shachem Lieuw, Story Time Productions) Hey there, fellow travelers. Shachem here, and let me tell you, I've been bursting to share this with you for ages. Finally, the stars aligned, and I have a moment to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard, as it were). Lately, I've been seeing an increasing number of comments on social media from visitors like yourselves complaining about problems using their Mastercards and Visa cards in Suriname. The struggles are real, and I hear you. The truth is, while we're making progress, international Mastercards and Visas aren't accepted everywhere in this beautiful country. You'll find some high-end hotels and restaurants catering to tourists will gladly swipe your card. But don't expect the same level of acceptance when you're exploring smaller businesses, local markets, or venturing outside the main tourist hubs. It's not a universal...

🐲 Story Time: Rising from the Dust & A Trip to Gao Ming

Hello friends, and welcome back to another Story Time adventure in tropical Suriname! 🇸🇷

As many of you know, I’ve been away for a moment. After having our belongings stolen, I’ve been slowly picking up the pieces of my blogging journey. The incident took a toll on my focus and motivation, especially losing so much content on my Samsung S23 Ultra. It has been a long road to recover from the damage our company suffered, and I’ll be sharing more about that in my upcoming "Blogger Notes." 📝

Someone I look up to once said, "It’s all in the game of life." This experience has taught me so much wisdom. I’ve realized that not everyone is guided by the same morals—a harsh reality for an idealist like me. But I believe we experience the shadows to appreciate the light. ☀️ I am so grateful for the awesome friends whose support was my foundation during these tough times.

I’ve never been a quitter. My soul isn't scared off by bumps in the road. Sometimes you just have to stand up, dust yourself off, and keep moving! The scars may linger, but I’ve learned to use that pain as fuel. ⛽🔥 We have officially re-opened our doors and are even planning to move our business to a new location soon!

A Sweet Discovery at Gao Ming 🧋

While out hunting for parts for our clients, we passed Gao Ming in Paramaribo Noord. Suddenly, I had a craving for my favorite Chinese Milk Tea and Yogurt! Don’t ask me the exact names—my Mandarin hasn’t passed the basics of Duolingo yet! 😂

Walking through the store brought back so many memories; my dad used to take us there for Chinese candy when I was a kid. This location in Noord is fantastic! They have a huge range of Chinese products, from cooking ingredients to frozen dumplings and siu mai. 🥟

I headed straight for the fridge and hit the jackpot! 🎯 I found those addictive beverages in even more flavors than usual:

  • Peach Milk Tea: Absolutely yummy! Just writing this makes me crave another one. 🍑

  • Vanilla Ice Cream Yogurt: Instead of my usual banana, I tried the vanilla ice cream flavor. It was a perfect blend of tangy yogurt and sweet vanilla. 🍦🥣

If you’re traveling through Paramaribo Noord, I highly recommend stopping by Gao Ming. You might be surprised by what you find—they even have Kimchi and a great selection of local and foreign fruits! 🍎

Check out the video of my visit below! Peek into this Chinese-Surinamese store with me and let me know what you think in the comments. 👇
