Story Time: Food hunting at warung Resa
How are you beautiful souls doing today? I am doing great and showing off my Story Time merchandise when I can. Life is a story, so don't worry! Sometimes you just hit a plot twist, that makes the adventure even more thrilling. When you reach that crossroad you get to prove to yourself how strong you are. On today's food adventure we are visiting Warung Resa. This famous Surinamese Javanese warung located at the Commisaris Weything weg 178 is certainly worth the visit on your travels in Suriname. It doesn't matter if you are planning to dine as a couple, with friends or family it's all possible at Warung Resa. I have even witnessed someone have a birthday dinner there during my visit. Suriname is the only Caribbean and South American country that has had Javanese immigrants. Because we were a colony of the Netherlands, after the abolition of slavery the dutch were looking for cheap workers on the plantations. At that time Indonesia was also a colony of the Netherlands. So they send over immigrants in boats to this tropical country that was very lucrative for plantation owners in the previous centuries. The descendants of those immigrants have integrated with our society and even their roots can be seen in different parts of the country. If you find Javanese people in the Caribbean there is a high probability that they or their roots came from Suriname and then spread out to the rest of the Guyanas, and even most Caribbean Islands. Sometimes even I am surprised when I manage to pop up and meet Surinamese people in different parts of the world. It's a small country, there are only half a million of us in the world but still, I get to be lucky enough to find at least one no matter what part of the world I find myself in. Now those are the small blessings I am grateful for in life. Like that Surinamese person who helped me when I felt left to explore the Tocumen international airport in Panama. You know who you are, sending you warm vibes while randomly typing up and finishing this story. But moving on to this Story Time food adventure edition,
when you enter warung Resa try to eat in if you can. The environment is worth it. As you pass the fish pond you will enter a beautiful gorgeous garden. It even has a bridge going over a small creek that I suspect is man-made. Just sitting in their garden to have food makes you think that you have found a part of Bali in the middle of this tropical jungle. For food, I ordered the Tahoe Longton one of my favorite Javanese dishes. I had Javanese grandparents, if my amazing grandmother was still alive she would not tolerate me eating out like this. But still, in the Tahoe Longton from warung Resa, I became nostalgic for a part of my diverse roots. Their food was as good as the ones my late Javanese aunt and grandmother made. It made me emotional but at the same time happy that despite them not being alive anymore I could remember them by finding food as good as they made at warung Resa. I also ordered some desserts that reminded me of the ones my family would make during the Javanese Muslim traditions we held. Like the pink pancake filled with brown sugar and coconut. It's really delicious if you love pancakes with a coconutty flavor. I also got the " satelliet". "Satelliet" is a Surinamese Javanese snack/dessert. I remember it mostly being served during Bodo ( The Javanese Muslim celebration of Eid Al Fitr) or other special occasions. This Javanese dessert is made from a sweet cassava pancake that is made in different colors with a baked sweet banana in it. " Satelliet" is sprinkled with coconut in most cases. Sometimes the grated coconut is served on the side.
My friend got the saoto soup. If you are visiting Suriname and don't try the saoto soup, you are missing out on a huge part of the Surinamese culture. Saoto is a staple Surinamese Javanese soup that is served at most parties and events. If you can handle spicy food try it with the red sambal or the yellow pepper and the black spicy sweet soy sauce. For the drink, I ordered the dawet. I don't like being disappointed when I order dawet. The popular pink Javanese drink also has a syrup you can dissolve for a quick drink. But I prefer the authentic pink coconut drink we call dawet. So I asked the server if I was going to get that one if I ordered dawet from their warung. He told me that it wasn't the one I could get from the store. With relief, I then ordered the dawet and it didn't disappoint. I made a video for you guys of my foodie adventure at Warung Resa. Because of the birthday celebration, I decided to respect people their privacy so I didn't get to film everything for you. But I did take some pictures. Look at it this way, at least you will have a little bit of mystery left when you decide to visit warung Resa in Suriname. Don't forget to subscribe to my blog and other Story Time channels.
