in Blauwgrond Paramaribo
Hello my dearest Story Time friends from around the world, how have you been? I am back with another Story Time food adventure. 2023 I am starting by catching you up on all the experiences in my few free moments. So make your you jump onto that Story Time U.F.O. when it pops onto your screen. That way you won't miss any of the awesome adventures that I have to share with you. In today's foodie adventure, we are talking about the Javanese food from Warung Ursi in Blauwgrond Paramaribo. I have a few more Blauwgrond stories to share with you in the near future. Blauwgrond means blue grounds in dutch. In Suriname, this popular area is a food hot spot for tourists and locals alike. When you are in Blauwgrond you will come across many Javanese restaurants. Most of them will be crowded, especially during the weekends. For this late-night foodie adventure, we picked out warung Ursi. We ordered different items from the menu to try for this Story Time food adventure in Suriname. What we got was the Tahoe Longton, one of my favorite Javanese dishes. Each time I have Tahoe Longton I became nostalgic for my childhood years. If you are visiting Suriname during your travels, be sure to complete your Surinamese vacation with Javanese food. The Tahoe Longton has Tahoe in it as the name implies and rice cakes. Topped with chicken and bean sprouts or as we in Suriname say Tjapar. You have to add the sweet spicy black soy sauce on top to mix it all together and you have a divine dish. I also ordered the saoto soup. This soup typically comes with egg, bean sprouts, chicken, fried potato bits, and other ingredients. The broth is rich in flavor. The saoto soup is one of the most famous Surinamese Javanese dishes and a favorite for locals and foreigners. This dish is served at parties, weddings, and all kinds of other events. We had the chicken sate. That's marinated chicken on a stick put over a grill. Surinamese people love their flavors, and Javanese people in particular don't joke around when it comes to their seasoning. 🍲😋🥘
I have to admit that the saoto soup at Warung Ursi was delicious. I like adding rice to my saoto soup. That's why they serve you a side bowl of rice as well when you order the saoto soup at most Surinamese Javanese restaurants or warungs. The chicken sate was seasoned well and the meat was nice and soft. You can combine the chicken sate with the black soy hot sauce but it also combines well with authentic Javanese peanut sambal. No, I am not talking about the European knock-off version ones that are made from peanut butter. I am talking about the real deal. We also ordered a bami chicken to go. Bami is another popular Javanese dish in Suriname. I made a short video for you about my food-hunting adventure at Warung Ursi in Blauwgrond Paramaribo.
