Beni's Christmas Palace In Suriname

Beni's Christmas Palace In Suriname Just like in the photo above this text, I am okay but I am not completely okay. I feel awful on the inside and for a long time it was difficult to find the motivation to return to blogging.  Tomorrow's Christmas, so I mustered all of my strength to at least finish another episode. I've been gone for a while because as usual, life got hectic. But this time in a bad way! As you guys know a while ago I started a company in Suriname. Most of my days were spent creating Story Time episodes, working, doing social work or going along to get a taste of the field.  When we go to clients, sometimes I get to see awesome places. Or in between on our journeys we tend to make pitstops. This Story Time episode is supposed to be about my visit to Beni's Christmas palace. But let me tell you about what happened after that first. Just so you can understand how my Christmas spirit, transformed in the energy of mourning. People see the good, but I'l...

Traveling To Hotel Plantage Frederiksdorp In Commewijne

Traveling To Hotel Plantage Frederiksdorp In Commewijne

" Shachem Lieuw at Hotel Plantage Frederiksdorp in Suriname with her cousins"

Hello, Story Time friends tuning in from all over the world! I am back with another travel adventure!👀😎It feels so good to be writing to you again from warm tropical Suriname. This time we are going to district Commewijne again! To get to our destination we cross the Wijdenbosch Brug (bridge) and head towards Marienburg. I visited Hotel Plantage Frederiksdorp with my cousins. Plantage means plantation in English. From my previous  Story Time episode we already learned a bit about the history of Plantage Frederiksdorp and what life was like in Suriname during the slave trade. This historical site has now become a hotel that hosts tours and activities. To get to the hotel you have to take a boat in Marienburg. I haven't been to this place in years. But I do remember that when I worked as a Caricom Youth Officer I scouted out this entire area for the Young Men Take Responsibility project. Back then it was my responsibility to coordinate Commewijne and Wanica. Doing a lot of fieldwork for these projects gave me the opportunity to get familiar with these districts. It's kind of a long story but somehow life made me find a bit of home in each district. Although I do have to admit that I have roots in Commewijne. My late grandparents lived in Jaglust and I love going to visit them. When we arrived in Marienburg, I noticed that after all these years not much has changed. I still visit Commewijne often, but Commewijne is so big, that I find myself in a different part each time. We found the boat that crosses to Plantage Frederiksdorp. You can just ask the boatsmen chilling under their camp and they will point you out to the right boat. To cross to the other side we paid around $13,15,-. But keep in mind that with inflation prices quickly change in Suriname. On the other side of the river, we stepped out onto the pier. We had reached our destination and set foot on Plantation Frederiksdorp. Before we got to the sugar pots there was a crosspath. One of the roads leads to Johan & Margaretha and the other one takes you to Kronenburg. But if you are as curious as we are, you'll have to subscribe to my Story Time blog for that upcoming adventure!😊😏 We arrived at the reception and they explained to us everything we needed to know about the resort and showed us around. Unfortunately, they didn't tell us at what time the reception closes.😓Maybe in the future that can be useful information for your guests as well, Hotel Frederiksdorp. 😒 The nice lady working at the reception gave us a tour and pointed out the breakfast area and the tour desk before taking us to the pool deck. they do have a nice swimming pool, with a matching view of the Surinamese nature. But the water in the pool didn't look clean. There were dead bugs floating in it and as a pool girl, I could tell that there was just a lot of chlorine added to the water. The swimming pool isn't deep either, but that just makes it kid-friendly. I could stand in the pool the entire time without the water reaching my shoulders. After we had seen the pool deck and the restaurant of the resort she brought us to our house. We stayed in politie huis number 3. In English, that means police house. It's called that way because of the History of the plantation. But these days the police house is the largest accommodation in the hotel. We were appointed to this house because we were with a group. It looked pretty despite the old design that's been preserved since slavery. I thought that the idea was a bit spooky and ironically after my visit a lot of my Surinamese friends who also visited this resort asked me the same.😂But I get it, Suriname has had a dark history when it came to the cruel plantation owners. The stories told about their cruelty are enough to shake your soul! Let alone the stories that aren't told! It's no secret that some tales get lost in time. It's a good thing we have the internet in these modern times. That way I know my stories won't be lost. Instead, they will be floating all over the web long after I'm gone. 👀😀💓👅 Our visit to Plantage Frederiksdorp turned out to be quite an adventure! That's why I had to break this story up into chapters. It would be too long to share in one story! Especially with the bad quality internet speed of my current internet provider! So make sure you jump onto that Story Time U.F.O and tune in for more travel and food adventures!👽👾🛸 I made a vlog of our trip in Commewijne!
