Beni's Christmas Palace In Suriname

Beni's Christmas Palace In Suriname Just like in the photo above this text, I am okay but I am not completely okay. I feel awful on the inside and for a long time it was difficult to find the motivation to return to blogging.  Tomorrow's Christmas, so I mustered all of my strength to at least finish another episode. I've been gone for a while because as usual, life got hectic. But this time in a bad way! As you guys know a while ago I started a company in Suriname. Most of my days were spent creating Story Time episodes, working, doing social work or going along to get a taste of the field.  When we go to clients, sometimes I get to see awesome places. Or in between on our journeys we tend to make pitstops. This Story Time episode is supposed to be about my visit to Beni's Christmas palace. But let me tell you about what happened after that first. Just so you can understand how my Christmas spirit, transformed in the energy of mourning. People see the good, but I'l...

Walking From Plantage Frederiksdorp To Johan & Margaretha

Walking From Plantage Frederiksdorp To Johan & Margaretha

" Fawaka" my Story Time friends? In Suriname, that's our way of asking "How are you doing?". It's a popular Sranang Tongo word. Sranang Tongo literally means Tongue of Suriname, and this language is spoken in all parts of the country. Invented during slavery this language contains Spanish, African, French, Portuguese, and Dutch influences. It was a language that the slaves who came from all parts of Africa created so that they could speak to each other without their masters understanding them. Now this language has been adopted by all the diverse ethnic groups living in this part of South America. It's a part of our identity because no matter where our ancestors came from Sranang Tongo united us as people. In today's Story Time episode, I am taking you guys on another travel adventure in Suriname! Our travel pin takes us to the district of Commewijne.

From Plantage Frederiksdorp we are walking to another plantation. This time we are going to Johan & Margaretha. Normally you can rent a bicycle and visit the nearby villages. But that will set you back a couple of Euros. One of the reasons why I enjoy sharing content about my country with you guys is to show people that traveling to Suriname doesn't have to be expensive! It all depends on your desires and what you are willing to settle for. Since I'm a cheapskate and Plantation Johan & Margaretha is just a 1 km walk away from the hotel, we decided to walk. 😂😁I promise you, I'm not the only one! My cousin was actually the first one to bring up this idea. 💡 In Suriname you'll notice that most places work with Euro's. That's because a large part of our tourists come from the Netherlands. Because of our History with the Dutch,  Suriname has remained a favorite retreat for these vacationers. We used to be a colony of the Netherlands and since we are the only Dutch-speaking South American country, you can imagine why our jungles are a preference for relaxation and peace.😅 Just as the sun was preparing to set in the sky we started our walk. It didn't take us long to arrive there. The village is really small but there are some stores and warungs available! If you don't want to spend too much money at the hotel, walking to Johan & Margaretha is a great option to help you save money on your trip. The food and drinks are a lot cheaper here than at the hotel. Besides it's always good to support and try local food. 😜 There is an ATM in the village, but it looks like it hasn't been working in ages. I do believe that Suriname has the potential to grow its tourism. However, the government should be willing to invest and create an infrastructure that makes it easier for tourists to get a hold of cash. I wrote an article about that a long time ago, but I didn't get the time to finish it yet. Recently I've noticed a lot of tourists complaining about how difficult it is to get cash here. Especially if you aren't from the Netherlands, since most of our financial infrastructure is meant to cater to those tourists. Even at the hotel in Plantation Frederiksdorp, not all cards are accepted. I read somewhere that they don't accept Visa as a payment method. Of course, I'll be pointing out these details for you guys in my upcoming blog posts. Even if it takes me a while to finish them.😂😁What can I say? My life offline seems to be more hectic than you can imagine! But I am doing my best and in the end, the result has become Story Time productions! Now that is something that I am extremely proud of. In Suriname, most of our ATMs don't work for at least 80 percent of the time. Even locals have difficulty collecting cash from their local banks and ATMs. That's why I recommend that you always carry cash with you when traveling to this beautiful tropical country! Depending on your Mastercard or Visa is a risky gamble and even when you find a way to access money those transfer fees will make you cry.😂😂 I made a video of our walk for you guys. Let's go and explore the small village on the plantation Johan & Margaretha on a weekend. We hung out there for a while because it turned out that my cousin practically knew half the village!😅That's how I noticed that it gets a bit crowded at night. There aren't many people living here. But those who do, seem to come out at night.  But before we get to that video, don't forget to subscribe!👽👾🛸 By becoming a member of my Story Time tribe, you'll be the first to receive my adventures and exclusive content in your inbox.😉😏 You might get buckled in, I am planning on ending this blogging year with a big spectacle 🎇🎆.
