I tried wood seal carving!

Hold on to your space seats, because the story time U.F.O. is back at it again, zapping fresh stories straight from the mothership into your inbox! 🛸 If you’ve been following my blog or my ShachemLieuw YouTube channel for a while, you probably already know I’ve been deep-diving into learning Mandarin and exploring more about my Chinese heritage. Well, my latest mission involved signing up for a wood seal carving class, and I liked it so much that I’ve officially decided to purchase a wood seal carving kit and turn this into a permanent hobby! 🧰✍️ Fun plot twist: we didn't actually work with real wood. We got to practice on erasers! But it was still super fun learning all the traditional carving techniques. (For those wondering, the Chinese carving knife used for this is called an intou or bidao —often referred to as an iron pen or a graver!) The class went pretty in-depth about the history of seal carving in China. Historically, seals (or chops) served as powerful credential...

Lunch At Hotel Torarica

 Lunch At Hotel Torarica

"Chicken and corn for lunch from Hotel Torarica in Paramaribo"

Hello friends, as you noticed, the Story Time U.F.O. hasn't taken off from Torarica yet! When we finished checking in at Royal Torarica, we were hungry! It's good that we were only a short walk from Torarica. Through the backyard of Royal Torarica, we found our way into the restaurant of Hotel Torarica. We sat in their dining room and ordered food from their menu. In my vlog, you will see the food items and prices listed on Hotel Torarica's menu. I had some chicken with corn. My plate was filled with greens and even included a chicken satay. It was delicious! But my favorite had to be the truffle wedges! If you are visiting Hotel Torarica, I'd definitely recommend trying it! They are topped with Parmesan cheese. A buttery but straightforward and flavorful dish. Stew ordered a fish dish that came with watermelon. It was relaxing to have dinner in the backyard of Torarica. We could hear the birds chirping, and some birds even landed on our tables. But keep an eye out for them! While I was getting up, one of them snagged some food from my table.😂 So be careful that they don't empty your entire plate! But I didn't mind sharing some grub with the birds. I also ordered a milkshake. It's made with ice cream and our Surinamese Fernandes soda. It wasn't bad, but I thought the vanilla milkshake I accidentally got was better. Someone's order was placed incorrectly on my table, and in my naivety, I drank their shake.

😌I'll blame it on my shortcomings, but I have no regrets. Okay, maybe I do regret not keeping the wrong milkshake! Because it tasted just so right.😂😛 Of course, the Orgeade is always a winner at Torarica! Orgeade is a popular Surinamese drink with a delightful almond flavor. It can be made with milk or water. I had mine with milk because, in my opinion, that's the best way to experience the taste of a good Orgeade! The meal was filling enough to reenergize me for the day. With all the long days and nights we work, I'm grateful to enjoy small moments like this.
